State Required Assessment Information

Introduction

Applicants requesting initial teaching licensure are required to achieve passing scores on professional teacher assessments prescribed by the Board of Education.  Applicants are also required to achieve passing scores on assessments prescribed by the Curriculum and Instruction department as program requirements.  Students are encouraged to come by the Office of Teacher Education and Professional Services in the School of Education with questions regarding the testing requirements or direct your questions to Deborah Walker at dswalk@wm.edu or 221-2320.

Assessments Required

  • Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators Test - A reading, writing, and mathematics assessment.  Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators Test, or an appropriate substitution, is required for admission.
  • Praxis II - A content specific assessment (see table below for specific assessments).  Praxis II is required for program completion and Virginia licensure (except Latin and Special Education).
  • Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment - A reading and writing assessment.  The VCLA is required for program completion and Virginia licensure.
  • Reading for Virginia Educators (if applicable) - The RVE is required for program completion and for individuals seeking an endorsement as a reading specialist or individuals seeking initial licensure with endorsements in Elementary Education preK-6, or Special Education-General Curriculum.

Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators Tests: Reading, Writing, and Mathematics

Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators Tests, or an appropriate substitution is a an admission requirement.

The Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators Tests, Reading (5712), Writing (5722), and Mathematics (5732) became effective January 1, 2014.  The Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators Test requires a passing score for each of the three subtests.  To register for all three exams use test code 5751.  Registering for all three with code 5751 will save you money.  There is not a composite passing score for this assessment.

Alternate Ways to Meet Praxis Core Requirement

There are three alternate means by which a teacher candidate may meet the Praxis Core requirement in lieu of taking the full battery of Praxis Core subtests (i.e., reading, writing, and math).

  • SAT Qualifying Score Option:  A composite score of 1170 with at least 580 on the Evidence-based Reading and Writing Section and 560 on the Math section if taken on or after March 1, 2016.  A composite score of 1100, with at least 530 on the verbal and 530 on the mathematics tests (taken after April 1, 1995 and Prior to March 1, 2016) OR a score of 1000, with at least a 450 on the verbal and a 510 on the mathematics tests (taken prior to April 1, 1995).
  • ACT Qualifying Score Option:  A composite score of 24 , with the mathematics score no less than 22 and the English plus Reading scores no less than 46 (if taken after April 1, 1995) OR a composite score of 21 may be substituted, with the ACT mathematics score no less than 21 and the English plus Reading scores no less than 37  (if taken prior to April 1, 1995).
  • VCLA Qualifying Score combined with a Qualifying Score on the Mathematics Subtest of Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators: Mathematics.  A composite score of 470 on the VCLA with subtest scores of at least 235 on writing and 235 on reading may be combined with a qualifying score on the mathematics portion of the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators: Mathematics subtest (minimum 150).

Praxis II: Subject Assessment Test

The Praxis II is a Subject Assessment Test.  One Subject Assessment Test is required and must be taken in your teaching endorsement area and is content specific. 
 
Praxis II is a program requirement and must be passed before program completion.

Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects (5031): Individuals must register for 5031 and take all four subtests in one setting.  A passing score on each subtest is required.  If a passing score is not obtained on each subtest, a subtest may be retaken as a standalone test.  Elementary Education Multiple Subjects (5031) will be discontinued on 6/30/2015.  If you took the 5031 series of exams and passed them prior to 6/30/15 the VDOE will still accept them for licensure.

Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA)

The Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA) is required for program completion and initial licensure in Virginia.  The VCLA is given by National Evaluations Systems, Pearson.  Refer to the following Website for more information about the test content, test dates, costs, accommodations for individuals with disabilities, and registration: www.va.nesinc.com.

The passing scores for the VCLA are as follows:

  • Writing Sub Test: 235
  • Reading Sub Test: 235
  • Composite Score: 470

Reading for Virginia Educators (RVE)

The Reading for Virginia Educators assessment (RVE) is required for program completion and for individuals seeking initial licensure with endorsements in the following areas:

  • Reading Specialist  (Test Code 5304)
  • Elementary  Education preK-6 (Test Code 5306)
  • Special Education - General Curriculum (Test Code 5306)

The passing scores for the RVE are as follows:

  • Elementary and Special Education - 157
  • Reading Specialist - 162

Students are responsible for providing copies of the RVE score report to the Director of Clinical Placements and Licensure.
